Musical Mondays: How Great

The Glory Revealed projects are two of my most favorite cds. Sung by a collaboration of Christian artists, each song is taken directly from Scripture. This particular song is from 1 John 3:1. This is probably my favorite style of music too -- a sort of folk, Americana feel. May this song lift your spirit and fill you with joy today!

How great is the love the Father has poured out on us
That we should be called the children of God
How great is the love the Father has poured out on us
That we should be called the children of God

How great how great
Is God's amazing grace
That we should be called the children of God

How great how great
That we believe our faith
And we can be called the children of God

How great is the love the Father that he sent his only Son
That we could be called the children of God
We will never perish if we believe in him
And we can be called the children of God

How great how great
Is God's amazing grace
That we should be called the children of God

How great how great
That we believe our faith
And we can be called the children of God

That is what we are
Sons and daughters of God
Oh by this we know love
That he laid down his life for us

How great is the love the Father has poured out on us
That we should be called the children of God

How great how great
Is God's amazing grace
That we should be called the children of God

How great how great
That we believe our faith
And we can be called the children of God

Yes we can be called the children of God

Musical Mondays (belated): My Next Thirty Years

Today's Musical Monday post is somewhat purposefully belated... It's my hubby's birthday today, and I wanted to share this song in honor of him. :) I love you Rocky! Your next 30 years will be the best years of your life!!

I think I’ll take a moment, celebrate my age
The ending of an era and the turning of a page
Now it’s time to focus in on where I go from here
Lord have mercy on my next thirty years

Hey my next thirty years I’m gonna have some fun
Try to forget about all the crazy things I’ve done
Maybe now I’ve conquered all my adolescent fears
And I’ll do it better in my next thirty years

My next thirty years I’m gonna settle all the scores
Cry a little less, laugh a little more
Find a world of happiness without the hate and fear
Figure out just what I’m doing here
In my next thirty years

Oh my next thirty years, I’m gonna watch my weight
Eat a few more salads and not stay up so late
Drink a little lemonade and not so many beers
Maybe I’ll remember my next thirty years

My next thirty years will be the best years of my life
Raise a little family and hang out with my wife
Spend precious moments with the ones that I hold dear
Make up for lost time here, in my next thirty years
In my next thirty years

Musical Mondays: Just Another Day in Paradise

This has always been one of those "feel-good" songs for me. Some days life just sucks. Everything seems to go wrong. But I look at Rocky and Abby and realize I wouldn't trade it for anything...

The kids screaming, phone ringing
Dog barking at the mailman bringing
That stack of bills - overdue
Good morning baby, how are you?
Got a half hour, quick shower
Take a drink of milk but the milk's gone sour
My funny face makes you laugh
Twist the top on and I put it back
There goes the washing machine
Baby, don't kick it.
I promise I'll fix it
Long about a million other things

Well, it's ok, it's so nice
It's just another day in paradise
Well, there's no place that
I'd rather be
Well, it's two hearts
And one dream
I wouldn't trade it for anything
And I ask the Lord every night
For just another day in paradise

Friday, you're late
Guess we'll never make our dinner date
At the restaurant you start to cry
Baby, we'll just improvise
Well, plan B looks like
Dominoes' pizza in the candle light
Then we'll tiptoe to our room
Make a little love that's overdue
But somebody had a bad dream
Mama and daddy
Can me and my teddy
Come in to sleep in between?

Yeah it's ok, it's so nice.
It's just another day in paradise.
Well, there's no place that
I'd rather be
Well, it's two hearts
And one dream
I wouldn't trade it for anything
And I ask the Lord every night
For just another day in paradise

Musical Mondays (belated): The Light in Me

I'm part of an online Bible study where we're going through the book of 1 John verse by verse. Yesterday and today we have looked at chapter 1 verses 5-7: "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin."

We have a Facebook group where we talk about the things we're learning in this study, and yesterday a gal posted this song. I've heard it on the radio a lot but have never really stopped to listen to the words.

Watch the video all the way to the end. It's pretty neat.

My life before You
I was a flame burning down
I was burning out

But You knew me better
For You there was never a doubt
God, since You gave me life
Something was different, I knew it the instant
You put the light in me

The spark, the shot to the heart
You are the hope that leads me out of the dark
You let Your love shine down
So that the world could see
You put the light in me

The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me

You are the Maker, you tell the sun when to rise
I'm just a house on a hill
But You make me brighter than all the stars in the sky
Keep me from growing down

Cause in Your perfection, I'm just a reflection
So pull me closer to You
I catch like a fire and I'll hold You higher
Cause You put the light in me

The spark, the shot to the heart
You are the hope that leads me out of the dark
You let Your love shine down
So that the world could see
You put the light in me

The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me

I'll raise it high, I'll let it show
From the rooftops down to the streets below
In day and night, You will be known
And all will see
You put the light in me

----------------------------------------------

God shines his light on me, so I can walk in the light instead of in the darkness. And his light is IN me, so I can shine it to others. "'Cause in your perfection, I'm just a reflection..." The moon has no light of it's own. It just reflects the light of the sun...

Musical Mondays: Forty Hour Week

Another Monday morning...

Millions of Americans off to work again...

Thank you!

There are people in this country who work hard every day.
Not for fame or fortune do they strive.
But the fruits of their labor are worth more than their pay.
And it's time a few of them were recognized.

Hello Detroit auto workers, let me thank you for your time.
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line.
Hello Pittsburgh steel mill workers, let me thank you for your time.
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line.

This is for the one who swings the hammer, driving home the nail.
Or the one behind the counter, ringing up the sale.
Or the one who fights the fires, the one who brings the mail.
For everyone who works behind the scenes.

You can see them every morning in the factories and the fields.
In the city streets and the quiet country towns.
Working together like spokes inside a wheel.
They keep this country turning around.

Hello Kansas wheat field farmer, let me thank you for your time.
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line.
Hello West Virginia coal miner, let me thank you for your time.
You work a forty hour week for a livin', just to send it on down the line.

This one is for the one who drives the big rig, up and down the road.
Or the one out in the warehouse, bringing in the load.
Or the waitress, the mechanic, the policeman on patrol.
For everyone who works behind the scenes.
With a spirit you can't replace with no machine.

Hello America - let me thank you for your time!

Musical Mondays: Our Great God

It's been awhile since we've sang this song in church, and I forget how much I like it. I love the words, and the tune is so catchy and powerful (and of course I love 6/8 time :) .

Maybe you missed the sunrise this morning? Maybe you're not looking forward to a new work week? Maybe you've got stresses in your life? Be blessed by this song today...

Like it? Click this link for another video of it, just a live recording of Fernando on piano.

Musical Mondays: Chicken Fried

A few months ago Rocky and I discovered the Zac Brown Band. We were actually riding in the car one night and listening to a country radio station, and one of their songs came on. I told Rocky, "You know, I've heard a few of their songs on Pandora and on regular radio, and I really like them!" And Rocky looked at me with this surprised look on his face and said, "Really?! Me too!"

That night we bought one of their albums on Amazon.

I find myself really enjoying their happy-catchy-fun sound, lots of acoustic guitar and fiddle, and amazing harmonies.

This song is my first favorite of theirs (even though I change the 2nd line to tea, or milk, or something else :)  but it definitely won't be my last. Watch the official video here (they've disabled embedding for it :(   or the live video below.

You know I like my chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
I like to see the sunrise
See the love in my woman's eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
Know a mother's love.

Well I was raised up beneath the shade of a Georgia pine
And that`s home you know
Sweet tea pecan pie and homemade wine
Where the peaches grow
In my house it`s not much to talk about
But it`s filled with love that`s grown in southern ground

And a little bit of chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I`ve seen the sunrise
See the love in my woman`s eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother`s love

Well its funny how it`s the little things in life that mean the most
Not where you live, the car you drive, or the price tag on your clothes
There`s no dollar sign on a piece of mind this I`ve come to know
So if you agree have a drink with me
Raise your glasses for a toast

To a little bit of chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I`ve seen the sunrise
See the love in my woman`s eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother`s love

I thank God for my life
And for the stars and stripes
May freedom forever fly, let it ring.
Salute the ones who died
The ones that give their lives so we don`t have to sacrifice
All the things we love

Like our chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I`ve seen the sunrise
See the love in my woman`s eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother`s love

Musical Mondays: Do Everything

I first heard this song by Steven Curtis Chapman a couple of months ago. The very first verse caught my attention -- "You're picking up toys on the living room floor for the 15th time today..." Sometimes we wonder if the little things we do in life really matter. We might say, "I'm not a pastor-missionary-professor-etc. I'm not changing the world." Well many verses in the Bible confirm that yes, everything you do is important, no matter how big or small!

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." -Colossians 3:23

Enjoy this video, just released a week ago. It's pretty humorous. And see if you can relate to any of the people he mentions.

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
-1 Corinthians 10:31

For a short video by SCC about the story behind this song, click here.

-------------------------------------------
You’re picking up toys on the living room floor for the 15th time today
Matching up socks and sweeping up lost Cheerios that got away
You put a baby on your hip and color on your lips and head out the door
And while I may not know you I bet I know you
Wonder sometimes does it matter at all
Well let me remind you it all matters just as long as you

Do everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you to do
Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace
With every move that you make
And every little thing you do

Maybe you’re that guy with the suit and tie
Maybe your shirt says your name
You may be hooking up mergers, cooking up burgers
But at the end of the day
Little stuff big stuff in between stuff
God sees it all the same
And while I may not know you I bet I know you
Wonder sometimes does it matter at all
Well let me remind you it all matters just as long as you do

Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you
To do every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace with every move that you make
And every little thing that you do

Well maybe you’re sitting in math class
Maybe on a mission in the Congo
Maybe you’re working at the office
Singing along with the radio
Maybe you’re dining at a five star
Or feeding orphans in Myanmar
Anywhere and everywhere you are
Whatever you do it all matters
So do what you do and don’t ever forget to do

Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you to do
Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace as you do

Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you to do
Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace with every move that you make
And every little thing that you do

-------------------------------------------

Have a blessed day, in WHATEVER you do. :)

Musical Mondays: When You Say Nothing At All

Every so often I get on specific music kicks. It could be a new artist I've discovered, or the weather puts me in a certain mood, or I hear an old favorite song on the radio. I have SO many Pandora radio stations...

Today I found myself listening to bluegrass. I started my Pandora station with Alison Krauss, added a little Nickel Creek, thumbs up'ed and thumbs down'ed a few songs, and voila -- the perfect blend of mandolin, fiddle, and sweet vocals and harmonies...

Alison Krauss has such a unique voice. She is one who I can hear a snippet of a song on the radio and know it's her. I'm sure her voice might irritate some people, but I like it. I think it's sweet, raw, and fits perfect with her style of music.

When You Say Nothing At All may be one of her most familiar songs -- since she recorded it in the mid-'90s. It was actually written by a couple other guys, Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, and has also been recorded by Keith Whitley and Ronan Keating. But her version is definitely my favorite.

(don't you just feel like you're in Appalachia?)

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain
What I hear when you don’t say a thing

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes sayin’ you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

All day long I can hear people talking out loud
But when you hold me near, you drown out the crowd
Old Mr. Webster could never define
What’s being said between your heart and mine

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes sayin’ you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

Musical Mondays: El Poder de tu Amor

A group of 8 youth and 6 adults from our church recently got back from a week-long mission trip in Costa Rica. Yesterday during the church service they gave a report on their trip, with stories and pictures of the many ways they served the people there. They also invited the congregation to sing a song that was familiar to us -- The Power of Your Love -- but in Spanish. The first full day they spent in Costa Rica was a Sunday, and during the church service they went to in the morning, they sang this song.

I know very few songs in Spanish -- just a few things like the ABC's that we learned in Spanish class in high school, and one really catchy song we did at VBS a few years ago when the theme was Fiesta. But I did take 2 years of Spanish in school, so I know how the letters sound and things like that. When the mission team asked us as a praise band to play and possibly sing this song with them, I looked forward to it. The toughest part was figuring out which beats the different syllables came on. :)

The song went well on Sunday, considering we asked the congregation to sing it with us impromptu. And I personally really enjoyed singing it. It's been stuck in my head the last few days, and unfortunately I don't remember all of the Spanish words without looking... so I've got quite the Span-glish earworm going on...

Do you know/like any songs in another language?

Musical Mondays: Christmas in July!

I love Christmas music.

I'm one of those weird people who gets so excited when a certain local radio station starts playing Christmas music around or before Halloween.

I wish I could pick one favorite Christmas song. We had this discussion with some friends last December. I really cannot choose just one. It really depends on the genre we're talking about.

There are certain carols I love (Silent Night, O Come O Come Emmanuel).

More modern holiday songs (White Christmas, It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas).

Fun Christmas songs (All I Want for Christmas is You, I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas)

Other modern Christian Christmas songs (Here With Us, Breath of Heaven).

And even songs [traditionally] without words (Carol of the Bells, Coventry Carol).

Oh and the one we kind of made up in our praise band a couple years ago, taking the words of It Came Upon a Midnight Clear and putting it to the music of Fernando Ortega's Our Great God...

What about you? Are you able to narrow down your list of favorite Christmas songs to just one or two?

Musical Mondays (belated): Burlap to Cashmere

I postponed this week's Musical Monday post because Burlap to Cashmere's new album releases today (Tuesday)!! This is a group I first heard about on one of the WOW albums back in... oh my... 2000. (ok that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, for some reason I was thinking it was '97 or '98, when I first started getting the WOW cds...) It was their song "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth" -- get it? B.I.B.L.E.? -- and I liked the acoustic/folk/almost-Mexican-ish sound.

Then I met Rocky in college and B2C was one of his favorite groups. I started listening to their music a little more, and their 1998 album Anybody Out There is still one of our favorites. The band split in 2001, and is now back together, 10 years later, for a brand-new, self-titled release that's still got their signature sound. Some songs are reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel or Jars of Clay, with the wonderful stripped-down, live folk-rock sound and Steven Delopoulos' signature voice.

Check out this amazing group today!!

Musical Mondays (belated): What if I Stumble

Heard this quote at church on Sunday:

"The best argument for Christianity is Christians: their joy, their certainty, their completeness. But the strongest argument against Christianity is also Christians--when they are sombre and joyless, when they are self-righteous and smug in complacent consecration, when they are narrow and repressive, then Christianity dies a thousand deaths." --Sheldon Vanauken

Made me think of this song:

Sorry the quality isn't that great... it's an older song, and it's one of the few videos I could find of a live recording of dcTalk.

Is this one for the people? Is this one for the Lord?
Or do I simply serenade for things I must afford?
You can jumble them together, my conflict still remains
Holiness is calling, in the midst of courting fame
'Cause I see the trust in their eyes
Though the sky is falling
They need Your love in their lives
Compromise is calling

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

[What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You never turn in the heat of it all
What if I stumble, what if I fall?]

Father please forgive me for I can not compose
The fear that lives within me
Or the rate at which it grows
If struggle has a purpose on the narrow road you've carved
Why do I dread my trespasses will leave a deadly scar
Do they see the fear in my eyes? Are they so revealing?
This time I cannot disguise all the doubt I'm feeling

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

Everyone's got to crawl when you know that
You're up against a wall, it's about to fall
Everyone's got to crawl when you know that

I hear You whispering my name
"My love for You will never change"

What if I stumble, what if I fall?
What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?
Will the love continue when my walk becomes a crawl?
What if I stumble, and what if I fall?

[What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You never turn in the heat of it all
What if I stumble, what if I fall?
You are my comfort, and my God]

Is this one for the people, is this one for the Lord?

(Gosh I love dcTalk's music... I wish they would get back together again...)

I can't change how other "Christians" act.

But why do I do the things I do? Is this one for the people, or is this one for the Lord? I will stumble. There is no doubt about that. But thank goodness for a forgiving God. If only the world was so forgiving...

Thoughts?

Musical Mondays: My Girl

This song actually reminds me of two separate events... The first being my freshman year of college, when Rocky and I had been dating for about 2 weeks. It was Valentine's Day, and we had a Campus Crusade meeting that night, and Rocky told me to make sure I got there early. I did. He was on the music team, and their last song before the meeting started was "My Girl." Wow was I ever in puppy love. :)

The second thing this song reminds me of is -- of course -- my Abby-girl. Today is her first birthday. One year ago right now the 3 of us were waking up in the hospital room (after not sleeping much in the past 3 hours) to a beautiful, sunshine-y, May day. In about 2-3 hours we would have our first visitors. We would take TONS of pictures. And we could not stop smiling.

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
When it's cold outside, I've got the month of May

Well, I guess you'll say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl...
Talkin' 'bout my girl.

I've got so much honey the bees envy me
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees
Well, I guess you'll say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl...
Talkin' 'bout my girl.

I'm really at a loss for words. I can't believe it's been a year already, but then again she's done so much in the past year. I love you baby girl, and I hope we have a great day today. :)

Musical Mondays: Baby Einstein

Ok so this post will be a bit of a tangent from Musical Mondays... but it's still related to music I guess!

Last night Abby woke up at least twice. This from the girl who's been sleeping through the night since 6 weeks. Something is really wrong when she wakes up crying in the middle of the night. Every time something goes wrong with her I blame it on teething... even though she only cut 2 teeth at Christmas and nothing since. Well the past few days her drool machine has kicked into overtime, so I think it really (really!) is teething this time. And she came down with a snotty nose. And she has a bit of a fever this morning. But she might have come down with a cold too, or still have remnants of her ear infection... You could just tell she really didn't feel well.

So when she woke up again at 5:45 and would not go back to sleep, I gave in and fixed her a bottle and prepared to be up with her for awhile. Rocky was up getting ready for school anyway. After he left, Abby just wanted to cling to her blanket and snuggle. I popped a Baby Einstein DVD in the computer and we kicked back for 40 minutes. After which I made her another small bottle and put her down for a nap (at the time when she's usually waking up for the day...).

Before Abby was born, I'd decided I would not be one of "those" mothers who sit their kids in front of the tv. The thought of videos such as Baby Einstein and even Praise Baby made me roll my eyes. "They surely don't get anything from those movies, and even if they do, shouldn't that be things I teach them?"

Fast forward to last fall. Abby was about 5 months old, and I went to FCCS's Barn Sale. Someone had donated a whole bunch of Baby Einstein DVDs and CDs. I thumbed through them, and one in particular caught my eye: Baby Wordsworth. We were planning on trying some baby sign language with Abby, and I thought maybe this will be a good supplement.

Over the last 6 months Abby and I have watched that video a handful of times, usually on nasty winter days when we want to snuggle and kill 40 minutes of time in the afternoon. This morning she smiled, and laughed, and I got a refresher course on some household sign language words!

I'm still pretty against tv in general, especially for children. We don't have cable, and we don't even have a tv that works with antenna channels after the big switch to HD a few years ago. There really isn't much good stuff on anymore anyway. Rocky and I will watch the occasional episode of NCIS or Fringe online every week or two. But we've decided we have much better things we can do with our time the rest of the time.

Who knows if Abby's occasional exposure to classical music through Baby Einstein will make her smarter in the long run. She gets enough music from other sources in our family... :)

What are your thoughts on tv & movies? In general & for children?

Musical Mondays: Glorious Day

I think this is my current favorite song. I love how it tells the whole story of Jesus -- his birth, life, death, resurrection, and how he's coming again. The verses are actually taken from an old hymn called "One Day." Casting Crowns did a great job of making it fresh and new and adding a chorus to summarize the whole story.

I'm in our praise band at church (I sing & drum), and we introduced this song to the congregation during Lent. We've sang it 3-4 times in the last seven weeks, and at yesterday's Easter service we used it as our closing song. It was amazing to get to the acapella part of the chorus after the bridge and hear everyone singing... "living he loved me, dieing he saved me, buried he carried my sins far away..." And the final "O glorious day" gave me shivers...

I hope you had a wonderful Easter!

For anyone who loves this song as much as I do, here's the official (live) video from the Casting Crowns YouTube page:

Musical Mondays: I Surrender All

This past weekend I had the opportunity to spend 3 days and 3 nights with some amazing women from all over the US & Canada as part of a GEMS training workshop for area coordinators and leadership trainers. On Saturday night, our last night of the retreat, we took part in a "commissioning service" and ended by singing the old hymn "I Surrender All":

All to Jesus, I surrender; all to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him, in His presence daily live.
I surrender all, I surrender all,
All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender; humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures all forsaken; take me, Jesus, take me now.
I surrender all, I surrender all,
All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.

All to Jesus, I surrender; make me, Savior, wholly Thine;

Let me feel the Holy Spirit, truly know that Thou art mine.
I surrender all, I surrender all,
All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.

All to Jesus, I surrender; Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power; let Thy blessing fall on me.
I surrender all, I surrender all,
All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.

The weekend was filled with emotional ups and downs, as the role of leadership trainer for our area is brand new for me. I would go from being super excited about this opportunity to being filled with fear. I still am not 100% sure how I will balance everything in my life, but I know I have an amazing support group behind me in these ladies I met this weekend, as well as my own family and friends.

I know I can't do it alone -- "Fill me with Thy love and power; let Thy blessing fall on me." Please pray for me in this new adventure, that I'd have the wisdom I need to do this job well, and that I can make my God and my family priorities in my life.

Musical Mondays: You Are More

A couple weeks ago I went to a concert with a group of ladies from church. It was a Sunday night, and I really wanted to write this Musical Monday post the next day... but of course life got busy. :)

The group Tenth Avenue North opened for Third Day, and I was surprised how many of their songs I know. They've only released two albums but have quickly become a well-known group in CCM. If I remember right, this song was the only one that they performed with their music video in the background. Watch it through to the end -- the conclusion almost made me cry.

I'm not perfect. You're not perfect. Many of the things written on this chalkboard could have been written by me... BUT don't you know who you are, what's been done for you? You are more than (insert your mistakes here)... you've been remade.

'Cause this is not about what you've done, but what's been done for you... This is not about what you feel, but what He felt to forgive you... The season of Lent is one where we think about what Jesus went through on the cross, but please remember that He didn't stay there! He overcame the power of death so that we might be forgiven and free!

But we're still not perfect. We will still screw things up. We will still struggle with all those chalkboard items. BUT those chalkboard items don't define who you are. You are more than those things.

re·make

[v.] 1. to make again or anew.

Hold on to that promise today.

Here are the full lyrics to the song if you're interested:

There's a girl in the corner
With tear stains on her eyes
From the places she's wandered
And the shame she can't hide

She says, "How did I get here?

I'm not who I once was.
And I'm crippled by the fear
That I've fallen too far to love"

But don't you know who you are,

What's been done for you?
Yeah don't you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you've made,

You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

Well she tries to believe it

That she's been given new life
But she can't shake the feeling
That it's not true tonight

She knows all the answers

And she's rehearsed all the lines
And so she'll try to do better
But then she's too weak to try

But don't you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you've made,

You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.
You are more than the choices that you've made,

You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

'Cause this is not about what you've done,

But what's been done for you.
This is not about where you've been,
But where your brokenness brings you to

This is not about what you feel,

But what He felt to forgive you,
And what He felt to make you loved.

You are more than the choices that you've made,

You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

You are more than the choices that you've made,

You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You've been remade.

You've been remade

You've been remade.
You've been remade.
You've been remade.

Musical Mondays: Hush Little Baby

Another lullaby I've taken to singing to Abby recently is the classic "Hush Little Baby." For some reason, one day it just popped into my head and I realized I actually remembered all of the words.

Then I got to thinking... that's a lot of stuff to buy. So, being the dork I am, I thought I would actually figure out how much the song cost (kind of along the lines of how much does my true love give me in the 12 Days of Christmas!).

Hush little baby, don't say a word, mama's gonna buy you...
  • a mockingbird. So after some research, it looks like a mockingbird is illegal to have as a pet. It is a native, wild songbird, and apparently state, federal, and international laws prohibit keeping them as pets. They're not sold anywhere. Hmm. Birds as pets can cost $10-$10,000. Let's go with $100.
If that mockingbird won't sing, mama's gonna buy you...
  • a diamond ring. Really? What parent would buy a diamond ring for their baby? Anyway... An article I found says that in 2005 the average diamond engagement ring cost $4146.
If that diamond ring turns brass, mama's gonna buy you...
  • a looking glass. When I think of a "looking glass" I think of "Alice Through the Looking Glass" so I"m going to assume this means a full-length mirror. Conservative average cost: $75
If that looking glass gets broke, mama's gonna buy you...
  • a billy goat. Here's something I actually know something about. I was in 4H and raised goats. This website shows an average cost of a breeding buck to be around $575. But I doubt a baby would have use for a breeding goat, so we'll go with the "commercial" bucks (read: fixed and just a pet) price of $130
If that billy goat won't pull, mama's gonna buy you...
  • a cart and bull. This one's a little tricky. You typically wouldn't buy a bull for purposes of pulling a cart... they're too unpredictable. A steer would be a better fit. But most steers are sold for meat, so using some of the information found here I'm going to say he'll cost us $600. Then let's throw a couple hundred in for the cost of a cart, and you've got $800 into this one.
If that cart and bull turn over, mama's gonna buy you...
  • a dog named Rover. Just like the birds above, dogs can cost $10-$10,000 depending on breed, etc. Let's say we get an average purebred dog for $500.
If that dog named Rover won't bark, mama's gonna buy you...
  • a horse and cart. Animals are tough to put an average price on. Horses can be $500-$XXXXXXX. But you can get a decent, unregistered horse for $2000. Add the cost of another cart... $2200.
And if that horse and cart fall down, you'll still be the sweetest little baby in town!

So what did we come up with? A grand total of $7951. And that doesn't include the cost to care for and feed all those animals...

Sorry Abby. I might sing this song to you to put you to sleep, but I'm not really going to spend $8000 on things that keep breaking...

Musical Mondays (belated): May I Have This Dance

So with Valentine's Day falling on a Monday, I suppose I should make a sweet, romantic Musical Monday post. :) (even if it's a day late -- see my Facebook status for my busy day yesterday!)

Maybe it's your laughter

Maybe it's the magic of your smile
Maybe you're an angel
'Cause hope is always dancing in your eyes
I can't imagine a more beautiful girl than you
May I have the honor of sharing a melody or two

May I have this dance
May I lead you across the floor
May I take your hand
And spin you around and round once more
May I hold you close
Before this evening is through
May I have this dance with you

Do you hear the music
Do you like the way they play our song
Do you know how much I love you?
Baby, I could hold you all night long
So close to heaven
My dreams have already come true
I'll treasure this moment
'Cause I'm making a memory with you

It was August of 2002, and Rocky had just gotten home from 11 weeks in Boulder Colorado on a Student Venture Summer Project (I went on the same Project the following summer!). We had been dating since February, so we had spent 4 months together followed by 3 months apart. Our group of college friends planned a get-together at my roommate Mandy's home near Frankenmuth, where a 2-night Christian music concert was happening. I honestly can't remember if Relient K was the first night or the second... but the other night featured Selah and Scott Krippayne (quite a variety, huh? yep, this is my taste in music!). Scott introduced this song, which I had never heard before, and Rocky reached over to take my hand. I knew right then that even though we had only been dating a little less than 7 months, if we were to get married, this would be our first dance song.

And, three years later, it was.
